Dennis Helfer along with Elaine Helfer are the parents of Helfer. She is born to German as well as English heritage. She was a student at William E. Hay Composite High School in Stettler, Alberta. She lived and worked on the family's farm along with her three sisters, Trena, Tammy and Tara. When she was 17 years old, a scout for models at an agency spotted Helfer while waiting at the front of a line for entry into the cinema.
